Tanote Bay and the east coast sites: why we dive there

Koh Tao is famous for its diving, but not every centre dives the same places. Calypso Diving is based in Tanote Bay, on the east coast of the island, and that is a real choice: we dive where there are fewer people and more to see.

The house reef, right in front of the centre

Tanote Bay is lucky enough to have its own reef, accessible straight from the beach. It is the ideal spot for the first dives of a course, but also for a relaxed outing: corals, schools of fish, sometimes a turtle grazing peacefully. No long boat ride needed to get your head underwater.

Laem Thian and Lang Khai, our east coast sites

For boat dives, we favour east coast sites such as Laem Thian and Lang Khai, the kind of places most west coast schools do not visit. The result: we are often alone on the site, without a dozen boats moored around us. It is calmer for the marine life, and far more pleasant for divers.

What you meet underwater

Around Koh Tao, marine life is generous. Green turtles, moray eels, schools of barracuda and snapper, anemones with their clownfish, orange soft corals on the pinnacles: every outing has its surprise. The east coast, often sheltered from the prevailing wind, offers good visibility for much of the year.

Choosing your site by level

A beginner will enjoy the shallow, calm Tanote reef. A certified diver can aim for the deeper, richer pinnacles and walls of the east coast. Either way, we match the site to the level and the wishes of the group, never the other way around.
