There are many dive centres on Koh Tao. Calypso Diving has been one of them since 1999, and over the years one thing has not changed: our way of doing things, deliberately against the grain of mass diving.
Four people, not one more
We cap every group at four divers. On paper it is less profitable, but it is the only way to truly guide people. One instructor for four means real attention on each person, in the water and on the boat. It is also safer, and so much more enjoyable.
Away from the crowd, by choice
Flo, who runs the centre, puts it simply:
We stay away from the other clubs, with staggered timings so we have the sites to ourselves.
In practice, we avoid the slots when everyone dives the same spot. We would rather shift an outing by an hour to have the site to ourselves. It changes the whole experience: the calm, the less disturbed wildlife, and the feeling of a private dive rather than a crowded guided tour.
Families, couples and people afraid of the water
Because the whole course is in the sea rather than a pool, and the groups are small, we can welcome people that big centres handle poorly: children, couples who want to dive together, those whom water intimidates. With them, we take our time. There is no schedule to keep at all costs.
